Shoppers love Melbourne. Boutiques and stores dot the CBD, and the city boasts of a vibrant fashion
scene. It should be no surprise then that this is only the latest in Melbourne shopping tradition.
‘‘Til You Drop’ at the State Library of Victoria is an exhibition that charts the history of shopping in Melbourne. Combining a wide array of materials, photos; paper bags; even architectural plans, we see how ‘then, as now, leisure time was shopping time’.
The exhibition shows how shopping has changed over the years. Not merely in terms of tastes and fashions, but also the changes in thinking and philosophy behind the retail industry from late 19th century onwards.
Informative and engaging, the exhibition reveals how much Melbourne and Melburnians have changed since the days of Federation.
A great place to hide from the scorching sun of the coming days, ‘Til You Drop’ is a free exhibition and is on until 31 October 2010.
